Forecast Discussion:
Sunshine early Thursday with clouds increasing as Earl moves north along the east coast. Beach goers need to be aware of high rip current threat and dangerous surf on the Atlantic for this week. Everyone is urged to stay up to date on Hurricane Earl for the next couple days. Earl will come close to the east coast, so expect dangerous rip currents, high surf, gusty winds, and even beach erosion. Current track keeps the center of Earl off the coast, but if it tracks farther west, the effects will be greater. Tropical storm force winds are expected along our immediate coast, and if Earl comes closer to the coast, winds of 40 mph or greater will reach farther inland. Prepare for strong winds along the coast and coastal flooding until Earl passes late Friday. Sunshine returns for the Labor Day weekend with cooler air as well.
Tropical Update:
Hurricane Earl is a strong storm and is a category four hurricane located 300 miles S of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Maximum sustained winds are 140 mph with a N movement of 18 mph. Hurricane force winds extend 90 miles out from center of storm. Tropical storm force winds extend 230 miles out from center. No significant change in strength expected today, but gradual weakening is forecast for tomorrow. Rain will arrive and winds will pick up here on Delmarva by late tonight/early tomorrow morning.
Tropical Storm Fiona is located 550 miles S out Bermuda. Fiona's maximum sustained winds are at 50 mph, and it is moving NW at 17 mph. Slow weakening is expected over the next 48 hours.
